Buck a classic company that has been making knives for the service personnel of the world over. This knife is one of their newer examples. It is praised by most and is given high marks. Its only drawback seems to be in the grip, sheath, and a bit in the QC process. This is not a showstopper, however. Most professionals often take a stock knife and customize it for their personal use. However, for the newbie outdoorsman, this knife might be a turnoff.
The legendary KA-BAR name will attract buyers like the Bear Grylls’ name attracts many to the Walmart line of EDC and survival gear. However, to do the same with the KA-Bar name is a shame.
This reviewer will see if the errors continue to impact one of the most famous lines of knives that goes back to its heyday of WWII in the Pacific where many relied on their KA-BAR to survive the hell of war as they fought across island after island on the drive toward Japan.
This knife is an ok buy and will perform as advertised. However, this reviewer feels it could have been a better product.
Buck Knives 0119 Special Fixed Blade Knife
When this Reviewer hears the name Buck it reminds them of the days long ago in the Navy where virtually every sailor carried a knife of some form or another, whether it was a Barlow folder, the ubiquitous TL38, and of course the Buck in its many incarnations. My father had a collection of over 300 knives and Buck made up a sizable part of the collection.
Today, Buck continues to put out some of the best knives on the market. For those in need of the best fixed blade knife, you don’t have to look further than the Buck 119. The 119 is shaped in the classic hunting knife style with the slim blade and brass pommel. This style of hunting knife has been part of Americana for over a 100 years.
It has gotten a new lease on life with its 420HC steel that provides a keen edge and makes it a long lasting knife that any outdoorsman would be happy to have strapped to their side.
● It six-inch blade is not too wide, which makes it perfect for cutting in confined places
● The Cocobolo Dymondwood handle gives you a secure grip without slipping
● You also have a leather sheath that holds you knife securely and holds it until you need it
● You, of course, have the Buck Forever Warranty
This reviewer has a soft spot for Buck. However, this take on the venerable 119 seems to be a little bit less of a knife as the same knife of 20 years ago. This may be indicative of the declining standards in manufacturing in America.
Overall, the knife is still a good buy and perfect as a give for a newbie outdoorsman. Veteran hunters and fishermen will still be able to use this knife for a variety of tasks and it will take a good edge that lasts.
The sheath is leather and will hold up for hard usage. However, after a while, you may need to have it re-riveted. This reviewer found it a good fish fillet knife and it fits the hand well. Some were put off by the reddish color of the handle as it clashes with the brass pommel.
This reviewer is more concerned with a knife’s edge and how long the blade holds it. Therefore, two thumbs up for a good classic buy and a knife you will be happy when you are in the field.

Who says the craftsmanship is dead The Helle family has been in the knife business since the 30s. Blades are in their blood. Most owners agree that this knife should be in any die-hard camping enthusiast. However, with each number of phrases occasionally you get a negative go along with it. This reviewer as seen Helle knives in the past and they are excellent blades. They are at the pricey end and would balk at a knife that I wouldn’t want to risk in the field. To this reviewer, a knife is a tool not an item of jewelry. The ancient Samurai with their magnificent blades were in themselves works of art. However, they were designed for hard usage and not just for show. This reviewer feels the Helle is a good knife but not one that I would risk my life with.
The Kukri of the Gurkhas is also made of wood but it is treated in a way and shaped to stay firmly in the hand that ensures a perfect grip. All my knives have to be able to work out in the elements with rain, snow, and mud all about. This handle needs extensive modification before it becomes a service knife in our book.
